Ever been at a networking event and stumbled when someone asks, "So, what exactly do you do?" If you've found yourself diving into a lengthy explanation about bank reconciliations and tax preparations, only to see glazed eyes staring back at you – you're not alone!
Here's a powerful exercise I share with my Bookkeepers Bootcamp members: Draw your business in four images or less.
Yes, you read that right. Draw it.
Why Drawing Your Business Matters
As bookkeepers, we love our numbers, spreadsheets, and detailed explanations. But in today's fast-paced world, being able to visually communicate your value proposition isn't just helpful – it's essential. Whether you're:
Pitching to potential clients
Onboarding new team members
Explaining your services to referral partners
Differentiating yourself from competitors
The Visualization Challenge
Grab a piece of paper (yes, right now!) and try to answer these questions through simple diagrams:
What do you do? (Beyond "I'm a bookkeeper" – what transformation do you provide?)
How do you do it? (Your unique process or methodology)
Why do you do it? (Your purpose and passion)
Who do you serve? (Your ideal client profile)
Common Stumbling Blocks
When I first give this exercise to bootcamp participants, I often hear:
"But bookkeeping is too complex to draw!"
"I'm not artistic enough!"
"My services are too varied!"
These reactions usually indicate that we need to gain more clarity about our own business model and value proposition.
My Personal Example
In my practice, I use three simple diagrams:
A triangle showing the progression from basic bookkeeping to advisory services
A triangle demonstrating our client journey
A rectangle mapping our service ecosystem
Nothing fancy, but these visuals have:
Shortened my sales conversations
Improved client understanding
Increased conversion rates
Strengthened team alignment
The Power of Visual Clarity
When you can visually represent your business, you:
Eliminate confusion
Build trust faster
Command higher prices
Scale more effectively
Your Turn to Draw
Take 15 minutes today to attempt this exercise. Don't aim for artistic perfection – aim for clarity. Ask yourself:
Can someone understand your business model at a glance?
Does your drawing show what makes you unique?
Would a potential client immediately see their pain points addressed?
Remember, if you can't draw it simply, you might need to simplify your business model or clarify your value proposition.
